I shouldn’t even call it a front yard, as there is no grass. It is more just a sidewalk with an entryway. We imagined that we were going to have a small square of dirt to plant or fill with grass. All the other rows in our development have one. For some reason we received an extra wide sidewalk. It can’t be changed but we can make it a little more inviting!
The same weekend that we bought the plants for the backyard, we bought some planters for the front. We also bought the bench the weekend Christian’s mom was here. Since our walkway is so wide, a lot of people use it as a way to get down to the Rhein. Some bicyclists go a little too fast, so we are trying to provide some blocks, so you can’t zoom through!
Christian’s mom recommended these planters because they have a water reservoir. Once you fill it up, you can go a couple weeks without needing to water the plants. Again, we need our garden to be as easy as possible for when we are out of town and for someone who might over- or under-water the plants.
In the two big planters, we have Buxus, Ivy and some pretty white flowers.
On the windowsill, we have a planter box with chocolate mint, parsley & romaine lettuce. In a small pot is some chives.
Now, we know now that we planted way too much lettuce in such a small area. They need more space. It is growing like crazy right now, so I am cutting off the outer leaves and eating salads everyday.
I have used the chives and parsley in many recipes lately. My favorite so far was a salad dressing: 1 cup of greek yogurt, 1/4-1/2 cup of olive oil, handful of chives & parsley, sprinkle of cayenne pepper and a couple dashes of Worchester sauce. Blend it all up and serve over salad. Really yummy!
So that’s our entryway. We think it looks inviting and I hope you do too!
