Our first stop on our little Netherlands tour was the city of Utrecht. It is located in central Netherlands and is the fourth largest city.
It was a warm, sunny day and there were lots of people outside at cafes and shopping.
There were even some kayakers out on the canal.
This is the Dom Tower of Utrecht. It is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands.
At one point the Dom Tower was connected to St. Martin’s Cathedral (or Dom Church). The nave (center section) of the cathedral collapsed in 1674 after a storm and it was never rebuilt. If you look at the first picture below, you can see how the street and trees run through where the nave used to be.
Utrecht University is located here and is the largest university of the Netherlands. There are a little over 30,000 students attending this university.
It was a quick stop in Utrecht, so we probably didn’t see everything but we did a good walk along the main canal. I think it would be well worth the visit to go up the Dom Tower to see aerial views of the city, so just keep that in mind if you are ever in Utrecht!
